There are usually three types of batteries available on the market. Lead-acid, AGM battery and lithium batteries.
Lead-acid batteries are one of the most common types of batteries used with trolling motors. They are an affordable option with a lower initial cost and can also handle the everyday use of a trolling motor. They usually last about 2-3 years and usually require checking your battery to make sure there is enough water in the battery. If you are running low on water, add distilled water to prevent damage to the battery.
AGM battery stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. Unlike lead-acid wet batteries, these types of batteries are completely sealed. AGM batteries are more expensive than regular lead-acid batteries, but do not require any maintenance. AGM batteries usually last 3-4 years, which is a little longer than normal lead-acid batteries.
Compared with lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries can last 10 times longer while being smaller and lighter. As well as supporting 1-2 hours of fast charging time to ensure you get the most out of your adventure.

Typically a trolling motor requires a 12 volt deep cycle marine trolling motor batteries that can deliver the required discharge power and discharge time. Lead acid batteries are less expensive, but they can spill acid. AGM batteries are sealed to prevent leaks and provide more power for longer periods of time. The price of lithium iron batteries is twice that of lead-acid batteries, but the weight is only half that of lead-acid batteries, and the service life is as long as 2000 to 4000 times. So if in terms of performance, Lithium batteries are clearly the best.
Lithium trolling motor batteries usually last for 4,000 times cycles, while lead acid batteries for 1,000 to 1,500 times cycles.
Also the lithium batteries are lower maintenance than lead acid batteries. Lead acid batteries need to be kept topped up with water to protect the lead plates inside them. And they will become damaged if they are allowed to get too hot or too cold. However, the lithium battery are sealed and maintenance free.

Once the battery indicator on your trolling motor shows that the battery is getting low, proceed straightaway to charge it.
Allowing the battery to completely drain out has an adverse effect on the lifespan of the battery. It could hamper performance.

Our experts note charging time depends on the specific charger in your system. Lithium-ion batteries have low internal resistance, so they will take all the current delivered from the current charge cycle. For example, if you have a 50-amp charger and a single 100-amp hour battery, divide the 100 amps by 50 amps to come up with a 2-hour charging time.
Another example is if you had five 100Ah (amp-hour) batteries for a total of 500Ah and a 100-amp charger. It would take about 5 hours of charging from empty to 100 percent while factoring in enough time to balance the charging cycle.
We don’t recommend you exceed this charge rate as it can lead to a shortened battery cycle life. In an emergency, the battery can be charged at a quicker rate if needed. But we don’t recommend you make a habit of emergency charging your battery.
